Dress Code

At Ensemble Dance Collective, our dress code serves a dual purpose: it enhances the technical and safety standards of our dance instruction while also honoring each dancer’s individuality. We believe that what we wear to class impacts how we focus, move, and feel. A thoughtfully defined dress code helps us create a respectful, inclusive, and professional environment that supports learning and celebrates self-expression.

Our dress code is designed to reflect why we are gathered together—to dance, to grow, and to express—while respecting who we are as individuals. We look forward to dancing with you!

Why A Dress Code Matters

A consistent dress code:

  • Promotes body awareness and alignment by allowing instructors to clearly observe posture and movement.
  • Encourages focus and reduces distractions for all dancers.
  • Prioritizes safety by avoiding loose or hazardous clothing in active spaces.
  • Supports gender inclusivity, self-perception, and comfort by allowing choice within guidelines.
  • Reinforces our shared commitment to the discipline of dance while leaving room for individual expression.

We recognize and welcome conversations about how our policies can best support all dancers. If you are a parent or guardian seeking a modification to the dress code for your student due to personal, cultural, religious, or physical considerations, please reach out to us. We are committed to finding respectful and inclusive solutions.

Ballet relies on clarity of line, which is why we maintain the most structured dress code in these classes. Consistency in attire helps dancers visualize and refine their technique.

Required Ballet Attire (all levels):

  • Solid black leotard (any style)
  • Skin-tone tights are the preferred option for uniformity and inclusivity (traditional ballet pink tights are also acceptable as a second choice)
  • Canvas or leather split sole ballet slippers that match the color of your tights

Hair: Long hair must be secured in a ballet bun for all ballet classes. You will find many online tutorials that demonstrate how to create a ballet bun tailored to different hair types and styles.

Undergarments: As dancers grow older and body changes occur, there are dance-specific undergarments available that provide the necessary support while remaining discreet and functional under leotards. These can be easily sourced from dancewear suppliers and are recommended for comfort and confidence.

Optional: A dance sweater or fitted warm-up layer is permitted at the start of class, especially during colder months. Students may be asked to remove it once the body is warm.

Alternate attire for Ballet (when preferred or required):

  • Black dance pants (well-fitted)
  • Well-fitted white t-shirt
  • Canvas or leather split sole ballet slippers that match your tights or pants

Not permitted: Skirts, tutus, or other additions that create distractions or safety hazards.

Pants:

  • Jazz pants, leggings, or other form-fitting athletic pants
  • Clothing should allow full range of movement and not drag on the floor
  • No jeans, skirts, or sports team uniforms

Tops:

  • Leotards or fitted athletic tops
  • Well-fitted t-shirts or tanks
  • Tops should stay in place during movement and not obstruct lines or instruction

Shoes:

  • Black slip-on jazz shoes (Jazz, Musical Theater)
  • Black slip-on tap shoes (Tap)
  • Bare feet or dance socks (Contemporary)
  • Clean sneakers designated for indoor use only (Hip Hop)

Hair:

  • Hair must be secure and off the face, styled in a way that does not fall forward or obstruct vision while dancing. Ponytails, buns, braids, or other contained styles are recommended for safety and focus.

Performance Program

For young dancers who love the limelight, our Performance Programs offer the perfect opportunity to shine! With flexible seasonal commitments, dancers can participate in specialized choreography projects in Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Musical Theater. Each piece is designed with a unique performance goal—some will compete at dance competitions, others will tour to outside venues, and some will take center stage in our own showcase events. No matter the stage, Performance Programs provide an exciting and dynamic way for dancers to grow, perform, and share their passion with a wider audience. Learn more and find the right program for you on our Performance Program page.

Competition

The Competition Program is a group of dedicated dancers who train together to perform choreographed routines at regional or national dance competitions. These events bring dancers from various studios together to showcase their skills in front of professional judges who offer constructive feedback on technique, performance quality, and artistic expression. Joining a competition team is more than just learning choreography—it’s about committing to a higher level of discipline, teamwork, and personal growth. Learn more on the Competition class page.

Momentum

The Momentum Performance Program is our audition-based program for dedicated dancers seeking advanced training in a pre-professional setting. Created for students who are ready to push themselves technically and artistically, Momentum offers a rigorous and inspiring environment that mirrors the expectations of professional dance training. Dancers are placed into one of two levels—Momentum I or Momentum II—based on age, skill, experience, and readiness, ensuring that every student is both challenged and supported.

In addition to focused technique classes, dancers in Momentum I and II gain access to a range of performance opportunities, from learning choreography for small ensemble works to participating in large-scale presentations. The program emphasizes versatility, discipline, and creative growth, while fostering goal-setting, self-confidence, and a collaborative spirit.

Whether preparing for college dance programs, conservatory auditions, or simply pursuing excellence, Momentum empowers young artists to move forward with purpose, passion, and momentum. Learn more on the Momentum class page.

Auditions

Interested dancers must audition to join either of our Performance Programs, Competition or Momentum. Auditions are offered annually, with make-up dates. Refer to our Performance Program pages for upcoming audition dates and opportunities.
